Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) will allocate around Rs. 1.5 billion annually to develop and promote school cricket across the country, Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Sunil Kumara Gamage announced in Parliament yesterday (24).

The Minister said the funding, channelled through the School Cricket Association, will focus on upgrading infrastructure, providing sports equipment, and organising school-level cricket tournaments. The initiative aims to strengthen the grassroots foundation of the game and ensure equal opportunities for aspiring young cricketers nationwide.

Minister Gamage also revealed that plans are underway to develop cricket grounds at selected locations in collaboration with Sri Lanka Cricket, further enhancing facilities for school players.

“This investment reflects our commitment to nurturing the next generation of cricketers and raising the standard of school cricket in Sri Lanka,” the Minister told Parliament.

The move comes as part of a broader strategy to expand the country’s sports development programmes, with cricket—Sri Lanka’s most popular sport—at the forefront of youth engagement and talent development.
