In the aftermath of Sri Lanka’s recent T20 series defeat to Bangladesh, Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage has appealed for a more balanced and supportive response from fans and critics alike.
Speaking at a media briefing, Gamage defended the national men’s cricket team, highlighting their recent successes rather than focusing solely on the setback.
“Why are we ignoring the two series we won and only talking about the one we didn’t?” the Minister asked, referring to Sri Lanka’s victories in both the Test and One Day International (ODI) series against Bangladesh. “Our players deserve encouragement, not constant criticism over a single setback.”
Acknowledging that wins and losses are natural in competitive sport, Gamage warned against letting one defeat overshadow the team’s overall progress.
He stressed that a fair and measured perspective was essential for the growth and morale of the squad.
The Minister revealed that a comprehensive plan is already underway to rebuild and strengthen Sri Lankan cricket.
This initiative, led by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and guided by Head Coach Sanath Jayasuriya, enjoys full support from the Ministry of Sports.
“We’re working with the SLC to create the right environment to revive the sport. Bringing cricket back to its former glory is a shared responsibility and we are committed to that goal,” he said.
