Sri Lanka dominates South Asian Senior Athletics Championship with 12 old medals

Sri Lanka’s athletes continued their golden run at the South Asian Senior Athletic Championship 2025 in Ranchi, capping off the final day with a series of exceptional performances that cemented their dominance on the regional stage.

The day began with a 1–2 finish in the women’s 400m hurdles, as Dasuni Kaushalya powered to victory in 58.66 seconds, followed closely by Araliya Sathsarani who claimed silver with 59.24 seconds. In the men’s event, rising star Ayomal Akalanka clocked 50.29 seconds to earn silver.

Sri Lanka’s supremacy extended to the javelin throw, where Rumesh Tharanga produced a phenomenal throw of 84.29m to secure gold, while Sumedha Ranasinghe added silver with an effort of 81.62m. Meanwhile, Olympian Dilhani Lekamge showcased her class by setting a new championship record in the women’s javelin throw, winning gold with a stunning 60.41m.

Middle-distance runner Harsha Karunaratne, elder brother of Olympian Thurushi Karunaratne, stormed to victory in the men’s 800m, clocking 1:51.96 to clinch gold. Thakshima Nuhansa added another silver for Sri Lanka in the women’s 800m with 2:06.51.

By the close of the morning session, gold medals from Tharanga, Karunaratne, Kaushalya, and Lekamge pushed Sri Lanka’s tally to 12 gold medals.

Earlier in the championship, Kalinga Kumarage dominated the men’s 400m, winning gold in 46.21 seconds, while Kalhara Indupa earned bronze. In the men’s high jump, Tharindu Dasun soared to gold with a leap of 2.17m.

Sri Lanka’s sprint relay teams also impressed, capturing gold in both the men’s and women’s 4x100m relays. The women’s quartet of Dhananjana Fernando, Amasha de Silva, Rumeshika Ratnayake, and Shafiya Yamick sprinted to victory, while the men’s team of Pramuditha Silva, Sandun Diyalawatte, Indusara Vidudhan, and Chamod Yodasinghe followed suit.

Earlier in the meet, Shafiya Yamick and Chamod Yodasinghe were crowned the fastest South Asian athletes, both setting new meet records in the 100m events, with Shafiya winning women’s gold and Chamod taking the men’s title.
