An investigation has been launched into the conduct of 18 high-ranking state officials accused of facilitating large-scale fraud and corruption involving political figures, according to reliable sources close to the inquiry.

The probe is being spearheaded by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), with assistance from other law enforcement agencies.

As part of the investigation, bank accounts of the officials in question are being examined, and several overseas transactions are under review.

Notably, five of the 18 senior officials under scrutiny have already fled the country, raising concerns about possible coordinated attempts to evade justice.

Janaka Sri Chandraguptha, the former Secretary to the Ministry of Health, was arrested by CIABOC over allegations of unlawful accumulation of assets and has been remanded until July 8.
