Minister reveals lack of regulation on seven high-risk chemicals

Deputy Minister of Defence Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd) has revealed in parliament that seven chemicals identified as high risk to national security are not being regulated under any institution at present.

The Deputy Minister had told the House yesterday (19) that 15 chemicals have been identified as high risk to national security and that seven of them are being regulated by the Controller of Explosives, but that seven chemicals were not being regulated by any institution.

Jayasekara had made this revelation in response to a question raised by National People’s Power (NPP) member of parliament (MP) Thushari Jayasinghe.

The Deputy Minister had explained that one chemical is regulated by the Office of the Registrar of Pesticides, adding that seven chemicals are not being regulated under any institution at present.

However, according to Jayasekara, a decision has been taken to supervise those seven chemicals under the National Authority for Implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (NACWC) functioning under the Ministry of Defence.
