20% of adults in Sri Lanka suffer from diabetes

20% of the adult population in the country is affected by diabetes, and alarmingly, 41% of these individuals do not seek any treatment, said Minister of Health and Mass Media, Dr Nalinda Jayatissa.

According to data provided by the Ministry of Health, nearly 60,000 people suffer strokes each year due to undiagnosed hypertension, with approximately 4,000 of them either dying or being left with permanent disabilities annually.

Furthermore, 35% of individuals aged 60 and above are affected by high blood pressure while 83% of all deaths in Sri Lanka are attributed to non-communicable diseases.
