SJB MP Dayasiri Jayasekara has accused Minister Bimal Rathnayake of authorising the release of 323 cargo containers without mandatory customs inspection.

Addressing a media briefing in Colombo, Jayasekara said the containers had been released without proper scrutiny by customs authorities and that there is no record of their contents or subsequent destination.

“There is no documentation to show what became of these containers. This is a highly irregular and suspicious transaction, and the responsibility falls squarely on the shoulders of the minister who authorised it. This is the largest act of misappropriation under the current government,” the MP said.

Jayasekara revealed that when he formally requested information on the containers, the only details provided were the countries of origin of the shipments.

“Customs has failed to provide any official records or inspection logs related to these containers,” he said, adding that officials cited concerns over individual privacy as grounds for withholding further information.
