Sri Lanka’s Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption has seen a surge in Right to Information (RTI) applications seeking access to the asset declarations of politicians, including President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe.
The applications, according to officials, are being submitted by opposition politicians, sitting MPs, and a number of former members of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP).
Among the applicants is Premasiri Manage, Secretary of the Forum of Former Parliamentarians, who confirmed he had filed an RTI request specifically seeking details of asset declarations submitted by members of the JVP.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission has also reported receiving similar requests. Its Director General, Saman Sri Ratnayake, clarified that while asset declarations are submitted to the Election Commission during nomination processes, only the Bribery Commission is legally authorised to release such information.
