Electric vehicle buyers have been urged to think twice for options in advance, since the prices of the vehicles, once bought, decline by the millions in the market.
President of the vehicle importers association Indika Sampath Merenchige told journalists that the now popular electric vehicles will pose new challenges to future buyers.
He attributed the steep declines in prices mainly to constant model changes in Chinese vehicles, unlike in the case of Japanese ones.
A Chinese electric vehicle bought today for Rs. 20 million could be priced at much lower at Rs. eight million within five to six years, he explained.
However, Japanese ones have been able to maintain their prices steadily.
Another factor is the owner’s access to solar recharging facilities, without which recharging and maintenance could become a big burden, said Merenchige.
An alternative is the Japanese hybrid vehicles that use a petrol engine to recharge battery packs.
Before buying, a proper evaluation of long-term price and market trends need to be done, he added.
