Call for action against extra classes by school teachers

The Rajarata Anti-Corruption Organization has called on Education Secretaries in other provinces to take steps to prohibit school teachers from conducting extra classes for students at their own schools.

This comes after the government’s decision to repeal a circular issued by the Provincial Education Ministry in the Western Province, which banned teachers in government schools from conducting tuition classes for their own students for a fee.

The circular, issued by the Western Provincial Education Secretary on the 20th, stated that reports had emerged about teachers conducting extra classes for their students outside school hours, charging money, and applying pressure on students who chose not to attend.

However, Deputy Minister Mahinda Jayasinghe later confirmed that the government would take steps to revoke the circular.
