Air Vice Marshal (Retired) Sampath Thuyacontha, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, has raised concerns over a growing trend of military personnel with weapons training expertise deserting the Tri-Forces to engage in criminal activities and join underworld gangs.

Thuyacontha stated that an order has been issued to apprehend such deserters, emphasizing that both the military and the police have the capability to track and arrest these individuals within a short timeframe.

When questioned about the involvement of active-duty soldiers in criminal groups, the Defence Secretary acknowledged that some personnel have been found to have connections to criminal activities, often driven by economic struggles or drug addiction.

He assured the public that efforts are being made to identify and arrest such individuals to prevent further escalation of the issue.
