A former state minister who obtained compensation for the damages caused to their properties during ‘Aragalaya’ has told the National People’s Power government to recover those payments from the persons who attacked their homes.

Asoka Priyantha, who represented the last parliament from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, received Rs. 7,295,000 and is among the 43 politicians who received compensation to the tune of Rs. 1.2 billion, as revealed by chief government whip Dr Nalinda Jayatissa.

Speaking in parliament yesterday (06), Jayatissa alleged that they had claimed massive compensation by influencing state officials to overestimate the damages.

While admitting to having received compensation, Priyantha has told BBC Sinhala Service that it was done as per state financial regulations.

He said he was prepared to pay back in the event any irregularity is found to have taken place.

He said he lost three properties for which he received compensation, but nothing for three ruined vehicles.

Priyantha said three court cases were pending in the Marawila court against the attackers to his properties, all of whom have been identified and evidence against them submitted.

The government can recover the compensation paid to me from them, he said.
