Govt. imposes taxes on essential goods

The government has imposed taxes under the special commodity levy act on several commodities coming under 63 categories from 01 January.

A statement by the Ministry of Finance said the taxes were imposed under a directive of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in his capacity as the Minister Finance of Finance.

Accordingly, Rs. 100 will be imposed per kilo on dried fish, including dried sprats.

It is Rs. 60 for potatoes, Rs. 100 for dried chillies, Rs. 50 for sugar, Rs. 40 for salt, Rs. 65 for rice, Rs. 50 for garlic, Rs. 300 for green peas, Rs. 360 for turmeric and Rs. 275 for palm oil.

The balance amount will be waived off after collecting Rs. 06 per kg from the applicable levy of 10 per cent or Rs. 400 on mackerel and jack and horse mackerel.

Furthermore, the balance amount will be waived off after collecting Rs. 10 per kg from the applicable levy for salt used in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals.
