Sri Lanka is currently facing a temporary shortage of dialysis needles, Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa told Parliament on Tuesday.

Speaking in response to a question raised by opposition MP Chamara Sampath Dassanayake, the Minister explained that the Medical Supplies Division (MSD) had been unable to procure the necessary stock due to the supplier’s inability to meet specifications.

He added that the government has now taken steps to rectify the situation, including the selection of a new supplier and a shift towards local sourcing.

Funds have already been allocated to state and provincial hospitals to prevent interruptions in dialysis treatment for kidney patients.

The Minister assured that adequate stocks have been purchased for major hospitals and regional MSDs, and the full supply is expected to arrive by 12 October.

Dr. Jayatissa emphasised that the government remains committed to ensuring continuous care, despite the procurement setback.
