Deputy Minister of Defense Aruna Jayasekara has stated that he is not aware of the sanctions imposed by the United Kingdom on several former Sri Lankan military commanders, including former Army Commander Shavendra Silva, former Navy Commander Wasantha Karannagoda, and former Army Commander Jagath Jayasuriya.
Jayasekara acknowledged the matter but admitted that he had not yet been briefed on the details. “I will look into that and give you more information. I do not know about it yet,” he said, adding that the news may have only recently surfaced.
The sanctions in question are said to relate to alleged human rights violations, though Jayasekara did not confirm any specific actions or sanctions during his remarks.
He stated that he would review the facts before making an official statement.
The UK government has previously imposed sanctions on individuals accused of involvement in human rights abuses in various countries, including Sri Lanka.
However, the Sri Lankan government has not formally responded to the new developments with regard to the sanctions against its military personnel.
