The angiogram machine at the Karapitiya hospital has been out of service for nearly a month, leaving heart patients in critical need of diagnostic procedures facing serious risks, according to a report by Ceylon Today.

The malfunction has caused a growing backlog, with some patients reportedly being scheduled for appointments as far as next year.

Patients who had already secured dates for the essential test have been left in limbo due to the breakdown, while private-sector alternatives, which come with additional expenses, are out of reach for many.

Families of patients are now urging hospital authorities to expedite repairs.
Karapitiya hospital, which serves a vast area including Galle, Matara, and Hambantota, is facing mounting pressure as the lack of a functioning angiogram machine endangers a significant number of individuals.

Hospital director Dr. S.D.U.M. Ranga explained that the machine stopped working due to a burned-out tube.

A replacement part has already been ordered, and repairs are expected to be completed as soon as possible, he added.
