Lower languages like ‘Sinhala & Tamil’ are barriers against people’s legal knowledge – Justice Minister

Minister of Justice Harshana Nanayakkara has claimed a language barrier that prevents the public from having a general legal understanding.

Knowledge on the law is very low among Sinhala and Tamil speaking persons, he said, adding that recent research has indicated legal education has come to be restricted.

“The English-speaking group has a general understanding of the country’s law. But, it is very low among those who speak Sinhala and Tamil, the lower languages,” he said in parliament.
