National Organiser of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and Member of Parliament, Namal Rajapaksa, has raised serious concerns over the government’s failure to provide adequate protection to public representatives in the face of rising organized criminal activity.

Speaking to the media, Rajapaksa highlighted that underworld figures, some of whom had previously opened fire in court, are now appearing at local government offices and engaging in violent acts with apparent impunity.

“The government seems aware of these criminal activities yet continues to allow them to operate unchecked,” he said.

Rajapaksa called on authorities to immediately ensure the safety of parliamentarians and other elected officials, emphasizing that mayors, municipal councillors, Pradeshiya Sabha chairpersons, and local council members must be provided with adequate protection.

Referring to the recent murder of the Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman, he said the late Lasantha Wickramasekara had requested police protection, but his appeals were ignored, exposing a serious gap in safeguarding public officials.
