Namal calls for PSC to probe NGO funding

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Namal Rajapaksa has called for the appointment of a Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) to investigate both registered and unregistered non-governmental organizations (NGOs) operating in Sri Lanka, following concerns about their funding and transparency.

Posting a statement on social media, he alleged that some NGOs have been functioning without proper registration while receiving undisclosed foreign funding.

He claimed that although these organizations operate under the pretext of war resettlement and poverty alleviation, their financial sources and activities remain unclear.

“But local media reports over the years have highlighted that some of these NGOs have been operating unregistered, giving no clue where their funds have been coming from,” he noted.

Rajapaksa argued that Sri Lanka should take such warnings seriously and conduct a probe in the interest of national stability.

“When clearly there is suspicion raised by the US government, Sri Lanka should not ignore the warnings and conduct a probe for the benefit and stability of the nation,” he added.

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) headed by billionaire tech entrepreneur Elon Musk revealed recently that USAID has spent $7.9 million to teach Sri Lankan journalists how to avoid “binary-gendered language”.
