Noncommunicable diseases on the rise among children

The prevalence of noncommunicable diseases has increased among children, warned community health specialist Monika Wijerathne.

The director of the Health Ministry’s nutrition unit told a media briefing at the Health Promotion Bureau that diabetes, high blood pressure etc. were on the rise among children.

Seven percent of schoolchildren in years one, four, seven and 10 are overweight as per data gathered during the national nutrition week last year, she said.

Also, obesity is evident among three pc of those aged 13 to 17.

Food habits among them reveal that 17 pc consume beverages with high sugar content and salty foods and high oil content intakes are 28 pc and between 28 pc and 29 pc respectively.

Overall, 41 pc consume foods with high sugar content.

Also speaking here, community health specialist Dinusha Perera revealed that one out of every five women in the country are exposed to domestic violence.
