The Sri Lanka Grama Seva Niladharis’ Association says they are facing political interference in the distribution of disaster compensation.
Speaking at a media briefing in Kandy, its Convener Sumith Kodikara said local-level politicians and rural activists linked to the National People’s Power (NPP) were pressuring officers to approve disaster loan applications for individuals who were not affected by the disaster.
He said the interference has disrupted compensation procedures across several regions.
Kodikara warned that the situation had escalated to the point where members of Prajashakthi Committees were “significantly interfering” in official duties, despite having no legal authority to take part in the process.
“If this continues uncontrolled, all those associated with the NPP in the country will have to be paid disaster compensation,” he said.
According to Kodikara, many Grama Niladharis continue to carry out their responsibilities despite being personally affected by the recent devastation.
He said some officers have been forced to walk long distances due to damaged roads and limited transportation to ensure the timely processing of relief benefits.
He noted that while Grama Niladharis are willing to coordinate with Rural Community Development Committees, they cannot allow these groups to assume or influence official administrative functions.
“We are ready to cooperate with them, but we cannot allow them to take over the power of office,” he said.
The Association said it strongly condemns pressure exerted by political actors, NPP activists, and committee members, noting that such interference compromises the integrity of disaster relief distribution.
Kodikara added that the Grama Niladharis have appealed to the President to safeguard their independence and to ensure they can carry out their duties free from political influence.
