Public given direct line to IGP via WhatsApp

The Police yesterday rolled out a dedicated WhatsApp number (071 859 8888) enabling the public to lodge complaints and flag urgent issues directly with Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasooriya.

From Wednesday (13), citizens can forward text messages, photos and videos to the IGP through the service.

Police Headquarters stressed that the facility does not support voice calls. Serving officers, too, may use the line to raise concerns or share information with the top cop.

The move, police said, comes in response to the need for swift, direct access to the IGP’s office during emergencies and problematic situations.
