NPP’s sluice gate spectacle

An opening ceremony for a newly constructed sluice gate in a reservoir was held recently under the patronage of Deputy Minister of Agriculture Namal Karunaratne.

A notable highlight of the ceremony was a traditional drumming performance, which involved school children in uniforms, and was organised with the participation of several ministers, including Minister of Public Security Ananda Wijepala.

Social media activists have mocked this event, pointing out that similar displays were rejected when the current government was in opposition.

However, since coming to power, even simple acts such as opening public washrooms or providing buses on local roads are now celebrated with grand ceremonies.
