Public pressure in Thailand prompts diplomatic visit to check on elephants in Sri Lanka

Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Suchart Chomklin, will arrive in Colombo on 28 November for high-level talks with Sri Lankan officials on the welfare of two Thai elephants gifted to Sri Lanka.

The two elephants, Plai Pratu Pha and Plai Srinarong, viewed as symbols of friendship between the nations, are currently housed at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy and the Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara.

Deputy Environment Minister Anton Jayakody said a team of veterinarians has been instructed to compile a detailed health and nutrition report on the elephants, which will be submitted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ahead of the Thai delegation’s arrival.

The visit follows growing public debate in Thailand over the conditions and treatment of the elephants. 

Deputy Prime Minister Chomklin has assured that his mission aims to address the issue through diplomatic dialogue and cooperation.
