Rs. 15 billion loss to CWE from rice exports

The CWE has incurred a loss of Rs. 15,157,031,018 in 2014 and 2015 due to the import of rice in violation of procurement regulations, it has come to light at COPE.

Chaired by Dr. Nishantha Samaraweera, the committee met on 10 October to inquire into the performance of the CWE during 2021 and 2022.

It was noted Rs. 27,011,980,142 had been spent to import rice in 2014 and 2015, but only Rs. 11,854,949,124 had been earned through the sales.

CWE officials told COPE the CID has handed over the matter to the attorney general for legal action.

COPE also deliberated on the leasing of buildings, officer appointments on contract basis, entrepreneur resources planning system of the CWE.

Chairman Samaraweera stressed the need to make the institution more accountable and sought commitment from its officials to achieve that.
