A ruling party Member of Parliament has been accused of verbally abusing and threatening an officer at the Welipenna police station following the arrest of an alleged moonshine dealer.

According to police reports, a Kalutara District MP of the NPP had contacted the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of Welipenna Police Station on June 4, aggressively questioning him about a police officer named Ajith.

The MP allegedly demanded personal details of the officer and accused him of falsely charging individuals with moonshine offences and using excessive force. The MP reportedly referenced Ajith’s familial ties to State Minister of Public Security Sunil Watagala during the call.

Shortly after, the MP allegedly made another call requesting the mobile number of Sergeant Ajith. Subsequently, Sergeant Ajith reported to the OIC that the MP had personally called him, using offensive language and threatening to transfer him to Vavuniya. The sergeant attributed the threats to his involvement in the moonshine arrest.

The sergeant formally recorded the incident under entry number CIB (2) 353/40, urging higher authorities to take appropriate action.

However, police sources reveal that since the incident, Sergeant Ajith has been absent from duty.

Senior Superintendent of Police for the Kalutara Division, Kavinda Piyasekara, said that an official investigation into the matter has been initiated.
