President should resign for unlawful prisoner release

Sarvajana Balaya Leader Dilith Jayaweera has called for the resignation of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake over the unlawful release of a prisoner, stating that the Head of State must take full responsibility for the incident.

Addressing the media this week, Jayaweera accused the President of being unaware of the consequences of his own actions, including the names of prisoners released under his orders.

Jayaweera further alleged that the Commissioner of Prisons, who had no involvement in the decision, has now been unfairly suspended while the real responsibility lies elsewhere.

Noting that the names of prisoners to be granted presidential pardons are submitted directly by the Superintendent of the Anuradhapura Prison to the Presidential Secretariat, he stressed that the final authority on such matters lies with the President.
