Poultry production has been adversely affected by the natural disaster situation, said Lanka Bakery Owners Association president N.K. Jayawardena at a media briefing on 04 December.

According to him, three million egg-laying hens had perished, already creating a price increase and a probable shortage in the near future.

Jayawardena called for swift intervention with alternative measures by the government to address the short-supply of eggs, with Christmas and New Year seasons at hand.

A shortage of eggs will result in either a price increase in bakery products or a complete halt in production, he warned.
