Sri Lanka’s national debt increased by Rs. 300 billion within a single week, Member of Parliament Ravi Karunanayake said.

Speaking during the budget debate in Parliament, the former finance minister noted that the U.S. dollar, which stood at Rs. 300 to open a letter of credit on the day the budget was presented, has since risen to Rs. 312, contributing to the spike in debt.

“The debt has risen by Rs. 300 billion within seven days,” he said, urging lawmakers and policymakers to consider the potential impact on investments.
