United National Party (UNP) Chairman and former Minister Wajira Abeywardena has raised concerns over the “helpless” condition of Sri Lanka’s younger generation, noting that disinformation and political division risk endangering the country’s future.

Speaking at a party meeting in Galle aimed at preparing trade union representatives for the UNP’s upcoming annual convention, Abeywardena urged political leaders to unite across party lines to provide direction and protection for youth.

“Our youth are being misled by programs that spread lies, hatred, anger, and greed. It is our duty as political leaders to come together on a shared platform to counter this trend,” he said.

He stressed that the current UNP is committed to guiding and educating the next generation, adding that political unity is essential if Sri Lanka hopes to position itself as a leading nation in Asia.

Despite Sri Lanka’s multi-party system, Abeywardena said that a common political approach was critical to ensure long-term social stability and economic growth, particularly for young people navigating a post-crisis environment.
