Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe has claimed his recent arrest is politically driven, insisting that his actions while in office were in service of the nation, not for personal gain.
“I acted for the country, not for personal gain. It seems today that the true face of this regime is now coming out. I do not accept any of the political activities taking place everywhere,” Wickremesinghe said in a pre-recorded statement, released by United National Party (UNP) Assistant Leader Akila Viraj Kariyawasam at a press conference in Colombo.
Kariyawasam also expressed serious concerns about whether there is a concerted effort to politically target a leader who played a significant role in rebuilding Sri Lanka after the economic crisis.
“He was the one who introduced the anti-corruption legislation. When his house was set on fire, he did not seek any financial assistance for its reconstruction. Shouldn’t a president be entitled to certain basic facilities? he said.
Former president Wickreemsinghe, who was transferred from the Prison Hospital to the Colombo National Hospital earlier yesterday, has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.
