An indefinite strike has been launched today by allied health professionals across 31 hospitals under the Western Provincial Council, protesting against the controversial 2024 transfer orders, the Joint Council of Professions Supplementary to Medicine (JCPSM) said.

The strike, which began at 8:00 a.m., includes radiographers, medical laboratory technologists, speech therapists, pharmacists, physiotherapists and occupational therapists.

JCPSM General Secretary Chanaka Dharmawickrama said the strike follows unsuccessful attempts to resolve their concerns over alleged irregularities and opposition to the transfer directives.

The JCPSM also conducted an unannounced trade union action yesterday (20) at the Gampaha District General Hospital after a hospital directive barred allied health staff from signing attendance registers, prompting a full withdrawal from duties at the facility.

Meanwhile, the Postal and Telecommunication Officers’ Union (PTOU) announced the continuation of a postal workers’ strike for a fourth consecutive day, severely impacting postal operations nationwide.

The union said the strike is based on 19 key demands.
