University lecturers across Sri Lanka will launch a strike on Tuesday (30), in protest against the government’s continued failure to address issues within the university system.

The announcement was made today by the Federation of University Teachers’ Associations (FUTA) at a press conference in Colombo.

Speaking to the media, FUTA Secretary and Senior Lecturer Charudaththe Ilangasinghe accused the government of neglecting the country’s higher education sector, despite having been in power for over a year.

Ilangasinghe also pointed to a growing exodus of academic staff, revealing that over 200 lecturers have left the University of Peradeniya alone within the past year.
