In a move to further strengthen the growing ties between India and Sri Lanka, the High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha, hosted a special reception for the Women’s Caucus of the Parliament of Sri Lanka at India House yesterday (16).
Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, Minister of Women and Child Affairs Saroja Savithri Paulraj, and several other women Members of Parliament were in attendance.
The gathering highlighted the deepening engagement between women leaders of the two countries and the shared commitment to advancing gender representation and empowerment.
Addressing the gathering, High Commissioner Jha emphasised the long-standing role of women in shaping the political landscape of both India and Sri Lanka.
He noted that both nations have been global pioneers in promoting women’s participation in governance.
The event also highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen parliamentary-level cooperation between the two nations.
Three members of Sri Lanka’s Women’s Caucus recently took part in an orientation programme at India’s Parliamentary Research and Training Institute for Democracies (PRIDE) in May 2025 — the first initiative of its kind aimed at enhancing institutional collaboration.
With the current Sri Lankan Parliament recording its highest number of women MPs in history, this evolving partnership is seen as an important platform for mutual learning, the exchange of best practices, and the promotion of democratic values.
