Trade Unions of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) have raised serious concerns over the government’s decision to reduce electricity tariffs.

Addressing a media briefing in Colombo, Chairman of the CEB Trade Union Collective, Malaka Wickramasinghe, pointed out that with the most recent price revision, each unit of electricity is expected to incur a minimum loss of Rs. 5.

As a result, Wickramasinghe said the CEB faces a serious risk of falling into a major financial crisis and emphasized that this could further burden the public in a twisted manner.

“Currently, the production cost of one unit of electricity is Rs. 30, and after the new price revision, the average selling price of a unit is expected to fall by more than Rs. 25,” he added.

He expressed these views during a media briefing held in Colombo.
