Sri Lanka has officially joined the global network of countries connected by Starlink, the satellite-based internet service owned by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk.

The announcement was made by Musk himself via a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday.

“Starlink now available in Sri Lanka!” Musk said.

Musk’s post was accompanied by an update from Starlink’s official account, displaying a coverage map of Sri Lanka marked entirely as “available”.

This follows the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) issuing a Telecommunications Service Provider licence to Starlink Lanka (Private) Limited on August 14, 2024.

The licence grants the company authority to operate its satellite internet services throughout the island.

Ranil’s role

During the Tenth World Water Forum High-Level Meeting in Indonesia in May 2024, then President Ranil Wickremesinghe met with Elon Musk to discuss the implementation of Starlink in Sri Lanka and committed to fast-tracking the application process to connect Sri Lanka with the global Starlink network.

“We had a fruitful discussion on a variety of interesting topics. Starlink’s expansion could be particularly transformative for countries like Sri Lanka, providing a lifeline to essential services and information,” Wickremesinghe said via a post on ‘X’ after his meeting with Musk.
