Sri Lanka’s cycling fraternity is mourning the loss of one of its most iconic figures, A.M. Sumanaweera, who passed away this week.

A veteran of the sport and a revered name in national cycling circles, Sumanaweera hailed from Ratnapura and was affectionately known as the “Little Gem of Ratnapura”, a nod both to his hometown’s gemstone heritage and his brilliance on two wheels.

With a career spanning several decades, Sumanaweera claimed over 1,000 victories in domestic competitions, including celebrated events such as the Lanka Savariya and Lak Pohara Paadi Savariya.

Sumanaweera’s prowess in mountain stages earned him legendary status, admired by both peers and emerging cyclists.

Sumanaweera’s discipline extended far beyond the racing track. While employed at the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, he was known to cycle daily from Ratnapura to Kolonnawa, a remarkable feat that exemplified his lifelong dedication to fitness and endurance.

His passing marks a profound loss not just for Sri Lankan cycling but for the nation’s sporting community at large.

Sumanaweera leaves behind a legacy of grit, humility, and passion that will inspire generations to come.
