Former President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) and Saliya Peiris (PC), has criticized the Sri Lanka Police for publicly questioning a suspect arrested in connection with the murder of Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Lasantha Wickramasekara.
Peiris’ comments follow the circulation of a viral video showing police officers interrogating the suspect shortly after his arrest.
The footage, widely shared across social media platforms, has sparked debate over police conduct and the ethical boundaries of criminal investigations.
In a Facebook post, Peiris condemned the practice of “parading suspects before the media” and coercing them into making public statements.
He warned that such actions, though they may attract public attention, could ultimately undermine the prosecution’s case once the trial begins.
“Sharing voice cuts and interrogation videos may thrill some sections of the public, but these childish acts do not enhance the image of the police. They are counterproductive and call into question the professionalism of investigators, bringing disrepute to the entire justice system,” he said.
