The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) will take necessary measures to bring the workers illegally staying in South Korea to Sri Lanka after the expiry of their visa period, its chairman Kosala Wickramasinghe said.
He said that the information of those illegally staying in South Korea will be submitted to the Criminal Investigation Department and necessary legal action will be taken against them.
He requested Sri Lankan workers not to overstay their visas as the job quota will be determined in the future according to the activities of those seeking employment.
Wickramasinghe revealed these measures while attending the presentation of air tickets for 96 Sri Lankans who left for work in South Korea yesterday (07) at the SLBFE.
He also said that steps will be taken to provide South Korean job opportunities to nearly 8,000 Sri Lankans in 2025.
Further commenting, Wickramasinghe said that among the 16 countries that recruit workers to South Korea, necessary steps will be taken to send quality workers with higher skills from Sri Lanka.
According to the Memorandum of Understanding signed between South Korea and Sri Lanka, 5,562 Sri Lankans left for jobs in South Korea last year, including 4,699 for the manufacturing sector, 846 for the fisheries sector, 16 for the construction sector and one worker for the agricultural sector.
Also, 115 women were among the workers who left for jobs in South Korea last year.
He further stated that the country’s expatriates remit over 6,000 million US dollars to the country annually, and that this money contributes greatly to boosting the country’s economy, and the government’s gratitude is extended to them for that.
