Indefinite postal strike leaves millions of items undelivered

Postal unions in Sri Lanka have declared an indefinite strike, bringing postal services across the country to a halt and leaving nearly 1.5 million letters and parcels stranded at the Central Mail Exchange.

The industrial action, which began two days ago, is driven by 19 unresolved demands.

These include new directives from the department’s Director General on overtime payments and a policy requiring all administrative and accounting staff to record attendance using fingerprint scanners.

Chinthaka Bandara, co-convener of the Joint Postal Trade Union Front, said there has been no official dialogue between union representatives and authorities to address their concerns.
