The government has indicated its intention of launching an investigation regarding the compensation received by members of parliament for their destroyed properties during the ‘Aragalaya’ period.
Speaking to reporters in Kandy, Media Minister Dr Nalinda Jayatissa says that an investigation should be carried out to determine whether the asset and liability declarations submitted by the MPs can corroborate the value of their properties.
Noting that insurance companies have also paid compensation to certain property owners, the Minister said they (companies) should reveal whether these high-value properties owned by MPs were insured or not.
Addressing parliament on February 6, Dr. Jayatissa said that 43 former MPs have obtained compensation for a tune of Rs. 1.2 billion for the damages caused to their property during the Aragalaya period.
