The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has expressed strong opposition to a statement made by Agriculture Minister K.D. Lal Kantha.
Following an announcement by the GMOA regarding the proposed salary revisions for medical officers proposed in the 2025 budget, Minister Lal Kantha said that the government has the sole authority to carry it out the way it pleases.
“We will give more to those we want to and also decide who gets less. No one has the right to speak about it,” Minister Lal Kantha declared.
In response to this statement, GMOA spokesperson Dr. Chamila Wijesinghe called for an immediate clarification from the government on whether Minister Lal Kantha’s remarks reflect the official stance of the government.
Dr. Wijesinghe pointed out that the Minister’s remarks appeared to suggest an ‘if you can’t stay, then leave’ type of attitude.
He said that while doctors may leave the country, the ministers will be held responsible for managing the nation’s hospitals, surgeries, and other medical services in their absence.
Stressing that specialist doctors and healthcare professionals should remain in the country, he said it is essential for the government to create an environment that supports them.
Dr. Wijesinghe added that Minister Lal Kantha’s statement contradicts the government’s policy, which aims to ensure a conducive environment for medical professionals in Sri Lanka.
