Sri Lanka has recorded 1,870 deaths in 1,757 fatal road accidents between January 1 and September 4 this year, according to police figures.
Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Indika Hapugoda, who oversees traffic operations, revealed the alarming statistics today, highlighting that an average of seven to eight people lose their lives on the country’s roads daily.
“This is a grave concern for public safety. All road users, including drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, and passengers must strictly comply with traffic laws, respect road signs, and exercise self-discipline to reduce these tragic losses,” he said.
Road safety remains a critical issue in Sri Lanka, where a combination of speeding, reckless driving, and inadequate infrastructure continues to contribute to high accident rates.
