Although the upcoming census of wild animals that damage agricultural crops is a joke to many, it is actually a scientific method used worldwide, says National People’s Power (NPP) MP L.M. Abeywickrama.

Speaking in parliament, he said that the lifespan of a Toque Macaque is around 20 years and these animals were bred by past governments, including during the administration of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands, and Irrigation has revealed that Rs. 2.4 million has been spent on printing documents related to the upcoming census of wild animals that damage agricultural crops.

The planned animal census, scheduled for March 15, is a historic first in Sri Lanka and is designed to count the wild animals that cause damage to crops, including giant squirrels, peacocks, macaques, and monkeys.

The census will be conducted between 8:00 and 8:05 am, with officials given a strict five-minute window to complete the task.
