An attempt by a top officer of the Palmyrah Development Board to remove a number of files linking him to financial fraud from the board’s Colombo office has been thwarted by officials attached to the Ministry of Plantation and Community Infrastructure.
It is reported that the officer was trying to move the files to Jaffna in order to burn them when the officials of the Ministry intervened.
The documents were later handed over to relevant authorities, sources revealed.
It is learnt that the officer in question was recently appointed to a high position on the board.
A decision taken by the Ministry’s Audit Management Committee on 8 January prevented the removal of these documents.
Meanwhile, employees of the Palmyrah Development Board have written to the Minister of Plantation and Community Infrastructure informing them that the person appointed to the top position has been accused of financial fraud and does not even possess basic educational qualifications.
They also alleged that this officer was trying to appoint a group of officials who had been removed after ministerial investigations revealed information about their involvement in financial frauds amounting to Rs. 400 million.
