Opposition lawmaker and General Secretary of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), Ranjith Madduma Bandara, has alleged that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake had issued a veiled threat to the National Police Commission during a recent public event held in Kalutara.
Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday (08), MP Madduma Bandara claimed the President is attempting to undermine the independence of the Police Commission by pressuring it to transfer its powers to the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
“The Police Commission was established to safeguard the independence of the police service. Never before have its powers been handed over to the IGP,” he said.
Madduma Bandara further said that recent police transfers were carried out by the IGP without the knowledge or approval of the Commission, a move he said raises serious concerns about political interference.
