Sri Lanka’s North Central Province is set to receive a significant boost to its sports infrastructure, with plans underway to develop an A-grade cricket stadium in Thambuttegama, Anuradhapura, the hometown of President Anura Dissanayake.

Minister of Trade Wasantha Samarasinghe, who is also the NPP district leader for Anuradhapura, made the announcement during a recent public meeting, revealing that the proposal for the stadium upgrade was initiated at the request of the President himself.

“Cricket came to Colombo early, but reached Anuradhapura much later,” Samarasinghe said, underscoring the disparities in access to sporting facilities across the country.

He stressed the importance of bridging that gap, particularly for historically underserved districts like Anuradhapura.

Samarasinghe pledged that the government would prioritize equitable development of sports infrastructure, ensuring rural areas are no longer left behind. “We want to see players from Anuradhapura launching giant sixes and earning their place on the national cricket team,” he said.
