Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe has urged opposition parties to set aside their political differences and unite in defence of democracy, as he continues to be treated in the Intensive Care Unit of Colombo National Hospital.
According to a report by the Daily Mirror, Wickremesinghe made the appeal during visits from senior political figures on Sunday morning.
The former president who is suffering from dehydration and high blood pressure has emphasised the need for a united front to safeguard democratic norms.
Wickremesinghe’s wife, Professor Maithree Wickremesinghe, was also seen at the ICU and is said to have expressed concern over his condition, which has sparked alarm both locally and internationally.
Opposition parties have rallied around the former leader, calling for his immediate release.
Several leaders met with Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa on Sunday afternoon, who is reported to have expressed support for a collective push against what the opposition describes as an erosion of due process. A bail application is expected to be heard in court tomorrow.
Meanwhile, senior United National Party (UNP) members met with Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha in Colombo, and are scheduled to meet a U.S. delegation later today.
According to the Daily Mirror, Presidents of three leading countries have also spoken directly with UNP General Secretary to discuss the latest developments while international human rights groups have also reportedly contacted the UNP seeking further details on the circumstances surrounding Wickremesinghe’s detention.
