Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe has rejected the G7’s recent communique that justified Israel’s attack on Iran as an act of self-defence, arguing that the strike occurred amid ongoing diplomatic talks between the United States and Iran.
Addressing the Valdai Discussion Club roundtable in Saint Petersburg, Russia, Wickremesinghe described the current geopolitical landscape as one of global disorder and shifting power dynamics, driven by the rise of a multipolar world.
He said that the traditional global order is being dismantled, with new power centres emerging not only across Asia, Africa, Eurasia, and Latin America, but also through the growing influence of non-state actors, military alliances, and multilateral institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
These forces, he noted, are now shaping the contours of global governance and decision-making.
Focusing on regional dynamics, Wickremesinghe remarked that the concept of the Indo-Pacific was developed to address the Taiwan issue, stemming from the lack of a defined Pacific boundary.
