Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe today called on the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports to urgently engage all stakeholders in resolving the growing unrest surrounding Sri Lanka’s youth clubs.

Issuing a special statement on Sunday, Wickremesinghe cautioned that if current tensions are not addressed, youth clubs which have been instrumental in fostering skills, leadership, and community engagement for decades risk “declining and dying a natural death.”

“We have heard there are going to be islandwide protests against the politicisation of youth clubs. The subject Minister should call all parties for a discussion and resolve the crisis,” he said.

The former President urged the government to facilitate a dialogue involving current youth club leaders, affected members, and the Ministry to “resolve the crisis amicably” and ensure the independence and integrity of the youth movement.
